Mission Statement The St. James Center for Spiritual Development, a ministry of St. James Episcopal Parish in Greenville, South Carolina, seeks to support and encourage spiritual growth in those whose mission is to serve others as Christ served. In our busy lives, we need to carve out time to listen to God. The Center provides opportunities for growth and transformation for those on the spiritual journey. |

Martin Darby is a member of St. James. He retired from his job at Coates Inks to become the Executive Director of The Bennett J. Sims Institute for Servant Leadership. Presently, he Co-Chairs the ISL Board with The Rev. Maggie Harney. His leadership role will be expanded to that of teacher as he joins with others to present small group workshops on the theory and practical application of servant leadership. Karen Eshelman has been active in the Episcopal Church since her first college organ lessons at Trinity Church (now Trinity Cathedral) in Portland, Oregon. While she serves professionally as the Director of Music and Organist at St. James, Karen also has an interest in contemplative prayer and facilitates a centering prayer group at St. James. Karen is a graduate of EFM, has served as an EFM mentor and is a member of Greenville's new chapter of Contemplative Outreach. The Rev'd D. Geoffrey Taylor is the rector of St. James Episcopal Church. Royce Ann Woody moved to the Greenville area from the Mississippi Gulf coast where she was active in Christ Episcopal Church serving on the vestry, as lay Eucharistic minister, Bible study leader and Christian Education Director. Royce Ann has been Co-Director of Sursum Corda Spiritual Directors' Formation Program for the past 17 years. She is a graduate of EFM and has a certificate in Pastoral Studies with an emphasis in spirituality from the Loyola University Institute for Ministry, New Orleans, LA. Carmie Cook is retired from Michelin, Inc., and is currently working on a certificate of spiritual direction with The Haden Institute. Carmie is an avid outdoorsman and volunteers at Pisgah National Forest in Brevard, North Carolina. He is a member of The St. James Dream Group. The Board of Directors for The St. James Center for Spiritual Development is made up of parishioners and the Rector of St. James. The Board meets quarterly to discuss programs and outreach opportunities centered on offerings to the community of St. James and the geographical area we serve.
Janet Atkins is the Director for the Center for Spiritual Development and has been a member of St. James for eight years. She has been active in the Episcopal Church for almost thirty years. She is a former sister of The Order of St. Helena, and has been happily married to Michael for twenty-seven years. Together, they have two children Drew, 24, and Claire, 22. Janet holds a certificate of spiritual direction from The Haden Institute where she has learned many tools useful in helping others in their individuation process towards that person God is calling them to be. Janet earned a masters degree in English from Middlebury College in 1997 and finished her MLitt degree in writing from Middlebury in 2008. In her role as Director of the Center, she serves as a commited presence witnessing to God's grace in the lives of spiritual seekers--the grace that is communicated through prayer and servant ministry.
